Friday 5 for August 28: Tolerance

Friday 5 for July 17: Scattergories
How’s your tolerance for alcohol?
Depending on if I’m driving, &/or if I can lay around in bed for a bulk of the next morning, I would say that I am usually a medium-weight drinker. I have had too many all-out-let’s-get-sloshed-crazy-naked-and-not-remember-what-happened nights/days of drinking…but that was when I was much younger.
p.s. I LOVE a frozen ‘rita, but I am fairly intolerant to tequila. I will happily down that sucker, but if I start acting like I am having a little heart attack, you know why. (Just let me lie down and it will pass in about an hour.)
How’s your tolerance for noisy neighbors?
Funny you should ask. My next-door neighbor was officially evicted this past week for noise complaints and for not paying rent. Sadly, no, it wasn’t Crazy Neighbor Jacinda—it was a single mother who had recently been fired laid off. (More about her and the eviction later.)
I have a high tolerance for noisy neighbors. If you want to rock out, by all means, please do so! I am all about people living life and doing their thang—no harm, no foul, you know?
However, at 9:00 on a school night, you better shut that shit off, especially when you are rocking out on your lanai which happens to be under my child’s bedroom window. If it’s still not wrapped up by midnight, the po-po will be making a visit, my friend.
If it were just me, I’d probably join in on the noise, but having a schoolage child changes everything.
(Thankfully, Ilona’s tolerance for noise of any kind doesn’t affect her sleep at all; she sleeps like a rock, snoring and all. When the neighbors were being too loud, Ilona never knew.)
How’s your tolerance for physical pain?
I can deal with pain, and unless there is a cockroach around, I am not squeamish. However, the older (and fatter) I get, the less I can deal with needles. This is primarily because it’s getting more difficult for medical personnel to find my veins to draw blood. Let’s not even talk about when I attempt to donate blood.
It used to be that I could even watch when the needle was going in, but now I just get all light-headed. It usually takes three sticks and a bit of “hunting” before they will find a vein, and it makes me want to faint. To top that off, I ALWAYS have a big ole bruise on my arm afterwards, no matter the amount of blood drawn.
Someone told me it was because the blood draw simply isn’t ever done correctly and blood pools up under the skin……….I am getting lightheaded just typing this….onto the next question….
How’s your tolerance for intolerant people?
I can’t deal with it. I have to walk away, or we’ll have a row. And that includes people who are picky eaters and who are hypochondriacs. (I’d like to add that I know people who are BOTH and it makes me insane when they talk about food or illness.)
For this reason, it’s rare for me to get into discussions with anyone about politics, religion, or the theory of evolution (which I believe in.) I have to feel a person out before I will go down those paths.
On a recent trip to a SCIENCE museum, I saw a guestbook signed by what I’m guessing was a busload of anti-Darwinism school children. It was PACKED with disses like “If evolution is true, then why isn’t this a museum about monkeys??” and “This museum is such a joke. I come from Adam and Eve. NOT A MONKEY!!” (I swear that those were real comments. I should have taken pics.) The comments were downright rabid.
For real, if you teach children to be blatantly ANTI- anything, would you necessarily encourage them to be intolerant of things?

I don’t mind if you are going to believe in one thing, and I am going to believe in another. BUT—we have to learn to live harmoniously. Period.
How’s your tolerance for bad music?
As with most things, it’s all about perception. For example, I like the Beastie Boys. You might not. You might like Yanni. I can’t STAND his music.
I actually enjoy a very wide range of music, and I recommend checking out the new artists on the Sixty One. (I know a certain reader who is addicted to it.)
My tolerance for bad music? I’ll give any tune a shot at least once.
